The above suggestions seem fairly practical & no particular objections in principle. The amendments to them require some consideration & enable them to be effected. I nearly wrote a lengthy letter but I cannot close it without a few personal words. Just be brave & be kind.
Sir Henry Blake says I am deficient in energy. If by that he means that I am ill, I indignantly deny it. I have always had my hands pretty full during the last 50 months before my departure. The press of work was so great that I have never known it before & my energies were stretched almost to breaking point. Several matters cropped up one after another, one of which occupied my whole time & attention for a week. I had to get up at 5 or 6 to prepare for the police court prosecutions.
For months, I hardly ever got any recreation of any kind except on Sundays, and even then I frequently had to go to my office to write reports & minutes requiring concentrated thought which I had no chance to give them during the constant interruptions of the ordinary day's work. I saw practically nothing of my colleagues and my life was too tired to enjoy our evening invitations because I was too exhausted to enjoy them & wanted rest. In my work, I could not have stood the strain longer without a holiday.
In the days when I had leisure, I devoted much of it not to my own pleasure but in improving my efficiency for the sake of the force. I studied Hindustani & extended my knowledge...
